The History of Hillcrest.

1947: Planting the Roots of Hillcrest.

The La Verne Church of the Brethren built our first retirement home back in 1947. Rooted in the Church’s egalitarian philosophy and its deep commitment to accepting individual differences, Hillcrest was envisioned as a place where all people could age with dignity, belonging and care. With six-and-a-half acres and a little good fortune, Hillcrest provided La Verne’s seniors with ten cottages, a chapel and a manor. Our inclusive, accepting nature has grown over time.

Today We’re Growing Bolder.

Over the years, Hillcrest has evolved as a Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC) to accommodate the needs of older adults and a rapidly aging population. The property now spans more than 50 acres and has undergone numerous upgrades, refurbishments and additions.

The community now includes The Village Center, a state-of-the-art Aquatic & Fitness Center, the Dean Kieffaber Interfaith Chapel with its beautiful, hand-carved oak doors and new residential homes in Pinecrest, Birch Court, Maple Court and the Village Suites. Hillcrest has just added seven to nine new homes known as the Gateway neighborhood. See below to learn more.

Hillcrest maintains top-rated healthcare operations to offer health services that fit the needs of each individual resident with a full continuum of care and long-term peace of mind.

Rooted in Faith, Growing in Inclusion.

Founded in partnership with the Church of the Brethren, Hillcrest reflects enduring Christian values of love, compassion and acceptance. Today, that legacy continues in our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Hillcrest is a welcoming community for all—open to people of every background, identity and belief. We proudly affirm LGBTQ+ older adults, people of all faiths and those of no religious tradition. Our doors and hearts remain open, in the spirit of belonging and mutual respect.

The Gateway Expansion: A Great Community Gets Even Better.

Hillcrest is expanding with the upcoming Gateway neighborhood. It includes seven to nine new luxury cottage homes featuring larger floor plans, upscale finishes and green-living amenities. Each two-bedroom home will include an attached garage, private outdoor space, EV charging and a personal gardening area.

We’re now accepting deposits on these brand-new homes—perfect for planners looking ahead to their first home in a 62+ community. As the first occupant, you’ll be able to choose your finishes and make it truly your own. Construction is tentatively planned to begin in 2026.
